Objective: To reinforce the importance of incorporating appropriate study strategies into tutoring sessions.
1. Watch video #6, Tutoring Learning Skills, from The Tutors Guide.
3. Review the following study strategies:
a. Textbook Reading--Read the article The SQ3R Reading Method. Using the concepts previously discussed in this unit, identify three ideas which have been especially significant for you. Why?
b. Mind Mapping--Read the article Mind Maps and complete the Mind Mapping Exercise. How can these concepts be used by students in the course(s) you are tutoring?
c. Note Taking--Read the articles Note Taking and The Note Taking Process Flows. Compare and contrast the various methods of note taking, including mind maps, the Cornell system, and 3x5 cards. List the distinctive benefits and features of each method. How are the methods alike? How do they differ?
d. Test Taking--Read the article Summary of Test Taking Skills. Write a short paragraph explaining ways you are effectively using test taking strategies. What can you do to help the students in your tutorials learn effective test taking strategies?
4. Which of the above study strategies have you found to be the most valuable for your tutees? Why?
