Types of Training
Generally speaking, our training sessions are categorized into three types; New Advisor Training, Specialty Training and Skill Development Workshops.
New Advisor Training is restricted to only those hired as an academic advisor at UVU. Occasionally, a supervisor of someone in an advisement-related function requests that a member of their staff participate in a select few of the ten New Advisor Training sessions because it directly applies to their current role and these requests are generally accommodated. For more information about New Advisor Training please follow this link in the title of this paragragh.
Specialty Trainings include things such as FERPA, Banner Online Services, Banner INB, and a few others. We also partner with other departments to arrange training for advisors in specialty areas such as Crystal Reports, Suicide Prevention and others. These sessions are often included in our semester training schedules and/or scheduled on an as-needed basis as in the case of Banner. It is a part of the ATD role to provide some trainings for all UVU employees as needed (i.e. FERPA, Banner). With the others mentioned, since the participation of advisors may not fill the sessions to capacity, other UVU employees are welcome to participate provided there are seats not being filled by advisors. Skill Development Workshops are primarily offered as a part of our semester training schedules and are developed specifically with advisors in mind. Examples of this type of session from our current training schedule are, Student Goal Setting and Attitude of Service. That being said, many of these sessions are more universal in nature and, though our primary audience is advisors, other UVU employees occasionally request to participate and are generally accommodated, provided there are seats not being filled by advisors.
