Generally speaking, our training sessions are categorized into three types; New Advisor Training, Specialty Training and Skill Development Workshops.
New Advisor Training is restricted to only those hired as an academic advisor at UVU. Occasionally, a supervisor of someone in an advisement-related function requests that a member of their staff participate in a select few of the ten New Advisor Training sessions because it directly applies to their current role and these requests are generally accommodated. For more information about New Advisor Training please follow this link in the title of this paragraph.
Specialty Trainings include things such as FERPA, Banner Online Services, Banner INB, and a few others. We also partner with other departments to arrange training for advisors in specialty areas such as Crystal Reports, Suicide Prevention and others. These sessions are often included in our semester training schedules and/or scheduled on an as-needed basis as in the case of Banner. It is a part of the ATD role to provide some trainings for all UVU employees as needed (i.e. FERPA, Banner). With the others mentioned, since the participation of advisors may not fill the sessions to capacity, other UVU employees are welcome to participate provided there are seats not being filled by advisors. Skill Development Workshops are primarily offered as a part of our semester training schedules and are developed specifically with advisors in mind. Examples of this type of session from our current training schedule are, Student Goal Setting and Attitude of Service. That being said, many of these sessions are more universal in nature and, though our primary audience is advisors, other UVU employees occasionally request to participate and are generally accommodated, provided there are seats not being filled by advisors. Advisor Training and Development (ATD) staff and facilities are available to academic departments and advisement support units to assist with the development and delivery of training. Whether it be offering specific training sessions, assistance with the creation of department-specific training elements, or the use of the video production studio or training lab, ATD has the desire to serve, support and collaborate. To request or discuss assistance with training and development needs, please feel free to Contact Us.
Skill Development Workshops are sessions primarily for advisor development and not to learn a specific skill. The topics for these sessions focus on areas such as advising best practices, advising theory, innovations in advising practice, important trends in advising and personal and professional advisor development. Skill Development Workshops are typically developed and presented by the Advisor Training and Development department staff, often in collaboration with advisors on campus. For a listing of available Skill Development Workshops, please visit the Training Registration System. To inquire about a specific workshop or suggest a topic, please Contact Us
Specialty Training sessions are offered to provide training in a specific knowledge or skill. Topics for these sessions may include training in policies and procedures, specific software products (including the Banner student information system Wolverine Track planning system), and other areas that require a specific skill or understanding. Specialty trainings may be developed and presented by Advisor Training and Development department staff or in partnership with other campus offices and individuals who have the particular knowledge, expertise or responsibility in the topic area. For a listing of available Specialty Training sessions, please visit the Training Registration System. To inquire about a specific training or suggest a topic, please Contact Us
The Advisor Training Registration System allows advisors to view and schedule training sessions made available by the Advisor Training and Development Office. In addition, advisors can see what training they have registered for and also training sessions they have completed. Advisors can also register for Advisement Forum and other meetings.
Staff requiring access to Banner Student Self Service can sign up for the "Banner Online Services Basics" course by accessing the Training Registration System or contacting Advisor Training at ext 6556.
