The Institutional Research & Information office (IRI) holds academic departments responsible for the data coding of Schedule Type and Instructional Method fields on all class sections. Always review proofing reports carefully and correct any errors.  Contact IRI for more information.

F
Face-to-Face
Course is taught primarily in person, classroom based.  This includes workbook courses with instruction, and courses with technology-delivered components such as online syllabi, online lecture notes; however, teaching and learning activities are classroom-based. (02-Jun-2003)
  • Used for lecture, internship and co-operative courses.
  • Not available to Distance Education.
  • Note:  IRI rolls "F" to "P" for state reporting.
H
Technology Enhanced
Course is taught both in person in a classroom and via technology.  The technology-delivered components include teaching and learning activities.  Use of technology does not reduce the time traditionally spent in the face-to-face class.  (01-Jun-2011)
  • Previously referred to as "Hybrid".
  • Effective Fall 2013 , most previously coded "H" sections will be changed to "J" or "K" to reflect the USHE definition and true section delivery.
  • "H" sections must include a TBA line to capture the required technology-delivered time.  For example, a course with a credit ratio of "4:4:1" could be listed as:

    Line 1:  MTWR 1300-1350 LA 104 (4 hrs face-to-face lecture)
    Line 2:  TBA (1 hour technology-delivered component)

    Note that the credits do not increase because of the TBA line.
J
"Blended"
Hybrid
Course is taught both in person, in a classroom and via technology. The technology-delivered components include teaching and learning activities and reduces the time traditionally spent in the face-to-face class.  (09-Aug-2011)

Correspondence
Course is delivered in print form, either as hard or electronic copy.  Students work at their own pace without significant interaction with instructor or other students in the class.  Students may use mail, phone, fax, or email to contact the instructor, submit work or take assessments.  Courses are generally enrolled open entry/open exit.  (04-Feb-2004)

T
Broadcast
 ("Television")
Course is taught via live or taped broadcast over open air, closed circuit, or cable television systems (i.e., KUED, KULC). The technology component delivers lectures and assignments one-way from the instructor to students. Broadcast classes may have internet-based or face-to-face components such as exam review sessions and proctored exams.  (02-Jun-2003)
  • Available only to Distance Education.
  • Used for all TV sections.
  • Maximum enrollment is limited to “60” (per AVPAA, Jan 2011).
V
Interactive Audio/Video
Course is taught via remote interactive video and audio (i.e., IVC, EdNET, Satellite) from an origination site to one or more receive sites or via streaming media technologies.  Lectures and assignments are delivered in real time, one-way from the instructor to students (Satellite), with two-way exchange capabilities between instructor and student (IVC or EdNET), or accessed online on demand via streaming audio/video.  (02-Jun-2003)
  • Available only to Distance Education video sections (cross-listed with a live home section).
  • Not used for tape replay broadcasts.
  • Cross-list max enrollment limited to “200” (per AVPAA, Jan 2011).
  • The State of Utah now requires all video home sections (located in broadcast room EE) be coded as video, not face-to-face. These sections will only appear on the Video (Distance Education) proofing report.
  • Note:  IRI rolls "V" to "R" for state reporting.
W
Internet
Course content is delivered online.  While online courses may require proctored exams, there are no other place-bound requirements and minimal synchronous (real time) requirements.  Regular interactions between students and instructor are a part of the teaching and learning process.  (09-Aug-2011)

  • Use for internet sections, both on and off-budget.
  • Note:  IRI rolls "W" to "I" for state reporting.

Classes with no defined clock hours where students register term by term and credits offered may not exceed the published credit hour value of an equivalent standard fixed credit class (e.g. directed readings, independent study/projects).  (24-Feb-1999)
  • Used for directed readings, independent study/projects, student teaching, etc.
  • The maximum enrollment of the course section cannot exceed “9" without Financial Manager and/or Dean approval (affects Faculty Workload calculations).
  • Faculty workload calculates from the credit hours, so INV sections can include any combination credit ratio (i.e., 3:2:2, 3:0:9, 3:3:0, etc.).
  • This code is not used for TV, Video or Internet courses without Financial Manager and/or Dean approval.
  • INV sections are not assigned a room.
LAB
Laboratory
Separate section laboratory setting course (can be credit or non-credit).  (14-Jun-2000)
