Last post direct from Oshkosh via special correspondent Doug Johnson:
Day #4 is the day of thunderstorms! Three separate thunderstorms rolled through! Much to my surprise, just as I returned to the airfield after a brief trip to the hotel, a white F-16 went screaming over my head! When the Thunderbirds arrive, the certainly arrive! The screamed over everything and everyone demanding attention. It was so cool! Unfortunately, the impromptu airshow was cut a little short by a thunderstorm. The rain picked up and everyone ran for the tents to hide. And it was big midwest style rain as well! It was really funny because in between storms the airshow would continue and while it was storming everything would shut down. Then, once the rain stopped, the next performance would almost immediately begin!
When I got a chance in between rain storms, I managed to sneak down to the seaplane base. Oh it was cool! Once you get the drop off point, you hike through a forest trail for a ways and then you come to this lagoon were all the float planes are docked! It’s really very cool. Then I got back to the main airfield and as soon as I did the rain really started coming down! I was trying find everyone I came with so we could close up shop and head back to the hotel. To make a long story short, I got thoroughly drenched! The rain was coming down so hard I took shelter under and F-86 wing… Fortunately that big aluminum airplane did not get struck by lightning!
So day #4 was a pretty awesome day all around! And being that this is the last entry until I get back, I’ll tell you a little bit about today. Day #5 at Oshkosh so far is like any other day at Oshkosh, incredibly awesome!! I’m anticipating the T-birds are gonna practice later! I talked with a woman named Kerran, I’m hoping we are gonna be able to add her to the student body here shortly. Later tonight we’ll attend a college mingling party where prospective students will be visiting us during a specific time to check out what we have to offer. Now as far as the weekend goes, you’ll just have to stay tuned for next week to cap of my whirlwind Airventure adventure!
