UVU Student Riley Woods awarded GlobalAir Calvin L. Carrithers scholarship

The first time Riley Woods took a discovery flight he knew he’d found what he wanted to do for a living, and he hasn’t looked back since. “I kept wanting to learn more,” says Riley. “You can never learn enough.” And the GlobalAir Calvin L. Carrithers scholarship that Riley recently received will help him do just that. The scholarship is a $1,000 award that is given each year to four full-time aviation program students from around the country.

Riley is currently enrolled in UVU’s aviation science online degree while living (and flying!) in Minnesota. UVU’s global aviation online program allows students to pursue flight training in their hometown while completing an aviation associate or bachelor degree online. Currently, the aviation science online degree has nearly 1,000 students enrolled worldwide.

The scholarship award comes with an interesting twist to it though. Recipients of the award must create, and maintain, a blog for the entire school year by posting once a week about their experiences with flight training and aviation. This was all new to Riley, who had never blogged before.

“I’m learning lots,” says Riley, “Your blog is a reflection on what you’ve accomplished. You’re posting what people want to see and you’re posting about what you’ve done.”

And readers of his blog can expect a wide range of all things aviation related. Riley, who has only been blogging for two months, has already covered topics from instrument training to his feelings about autumn weather flying.

You can follow along with his aviation adventures on his site, FlyingwithPassion.org.

By requiring award recipients to create and maintain a blog, the scholarship aims to help students improve their writing skills and develop a network of peers and contacts within the aviation industry.

Riley plans on using his blog to share and reflect on his training experiences and monitor his own personal improvement. “ I want to let people know how something went or what was difficult, or if I improved on something,” he says.

And Riley’s favorite part of flying—the thing that hooked him and keeps him going back for more? “You feel really free. Everything else in your mind kind of disappears and it’s all about flying the airplane.”

The next application period for the GlobalAir.com Calvin L. Carrithers Aviation Scholarship starts April 14, 2016. To learn more about the scholarship visit globalair.com/scholarships.
