I-20 Certificate of Eligibility

This document issued by the designated international student admissions officer to international students with nonimmigrant status, is to be used to apply for an F-1 or M-1 Visa to the United States.

Only persons who do not intend to remain permanently in the United States and who have adequate financial resources are eligible for such status.

Form I-94

The I-94 is issued to international students at the port of entry to the United States. Normally the form is stapled to each individual's passport. This card must be presented prior to registration.

Educational Costs

An estimate of an academic school year costs, as determined by UVU, is stated on the I-20 form prior to issuance to the student. The American Consul uses this information to determine the adequacy of the applicant's financial resources.

Contract of Support

This is a document presented by an international student to UVU to show evidence of adequate financial resources. Upon satisfactory completion of other admission requirements, the contract is returned to the prospective student along with the I-20, which may then be presented to an American Consul or immigrant office to gain an F-1 or M-1 Visa.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery

The purpose of the TOEFL is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. Since July of 1998, all TOEFL exams are administered on the computer. For more information visit the TOEFL website at www.toefl.org

The TOEFL is a confidential examination given through procedures designed to protect its security before, during, and after its administration. Scores over one-year old are not acceptable. Information of TOEFL may also be obtained by writing:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
P.O. Box 899
Princeton, NJ 08541
U.S.A.

or by contacting the American Consul. A minimum score of 500 (paper based), 173 (computer based), 61 (internet based) for TOEFL or 80 for MELAB is required for admittance to UVU. No scores are needed for admittance to the Intensive English program. In addition, all UVU students whose native language is not English must take an English proficiency examination. This exam is given prior to enrollment as part of College orientation and will determine first semester classes.

Scholarship and Financial Aid

International students are not eligible for scholarships or financial aid from the United States Government or UVU.

Academic Load

An international student is required to carry a minimum of 12 hours of credit that apply toward a major each academic semester of fall and spring. Summer is optional unless it is the student's first term at UVU or the student has attended school for more than one year and uses a semester other than summer as a vacation. The 12 credit hour requirement may not include repeated classes or audit classes.

Hospitalization and Health Insurance

UVU recommends that international students acquire appropriate insurance while in school. Information can be obtained at the UVU Wellness Center.

Tuberculin Skin Test

Each international student must independently acquire a Tuberculin Skin Test after entering the United States. This may be obtained at the Wellness Center on campus or the Utah County Health Department. Written results must be submitted to the UVU Wellness Center prior to registering for classes. An international student transferring from another institution within the United States may present written results from a previous skin test.

Other International Students

  1. Obtain an I-20 from your flight school and a visa. (Typically an F-1 student visa but can be different depending on situation.)
  2. Be enrolled in the flight school at least ¾ of full-time status. Your flight school determines this using their own criteria.
  3. Go back to your home country and finish up online courses once flight school is over. You can finish up your current semester of online courses first if their flight school finishes during a UVU semester, but once the semester is over, you will need to go home since you will be out of status with your I-20.
  • We will also need the following documents:
    • A copy of your I-20
    • A letter from your flight school giving permission for you to take our online courses
    • A copy of you I-94 card (a white card stapled inside the student's passport)
    • Proof of completion of the TOEFL exam if your native language is not English. We will need your official results page.

Home Country International Students

Fill out and submit the online Application for Admission and follow the instructions and steps found on the Admissions page of our website. In addition to this, you will also need to complete the TOEFL exam if your native language is not English.
