Course Description

This course is a five credit nontransferable course preparatory to ENGL 1010.    This course does not transfer to other institutions of higher education; however, the grade you receive for this course does count towards your GPA.

This course requires students to create portfolios that include informative, persuasive, and multiple-source essays. This course helps students to understand peer review and collaborative learning processes both in the classroom and online. In addition, this course prepares students for ENGL 1010 and other writing intensive courses by asking them to write for various academic audiences.  Prerequisite(s): ENGH 0890 or appropriate placement score.

Course Objectives

In 0990, students are being prepared to write for ENGL 1010 and their other college courses. In 0990, students:

-Prepare for ENGL 1010 by learning peer review skills, critical thinking skills, and understanding writing for different audiences.
-Work online and collaboratively.
-Edit their papers for correct usage and mechanical accuracy.
-Focus on informative, persuasive and research strategies.
-Write mixed-genre papers where multiple sources are integrated into their essay writing.
-Create portfolios, a collection of assigned writing which demonstrate student progress over the term.
