VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to help with an exciting new program. Friends of Animals is teaming up with the Animal Alliance of Utah to organize a Pit Bull Rescue.  Pit Bulls are probably the most misunderstood breed in the country today and, unfortunately, they have the highest rate of euthanasia in shelters.  Pit Bull Terriers are also the most poorly represented dog in the media (unless, of course, it’s bad publicity).  When placed with responsible owners, Pit Bulls are among the smartest and most loyal and loving breeds. We are looking for college students, namely behavioral science majors, who would like to help with this program and also help orchestrate the STRIVE Canine Program, which places dogs in prisons where they can be trained and cared for, thus enhancing their chance at adoption.  If you are interested in helping with this exciting new program and actually saving the lives of hundreds of dogs, please email Traci Madson at
k9luvr25@yahoo.com .  Thanks for Rescuing!

Papilion House, Inc.
is a licensed sober living facility for women recovering from addiction located in American Fork, Utah.  They have been in operation since October 2006 at a previous location.  They are a non-profit organization which actively participates in the Utah County Continuum of Care. Papilion House, Inc. is dedicated to providing safe, decent, affordable sober housing to women in all stages of recovery.  Their life skills program and encouragement towards community service projects are just some of the ways in which they empower their clients.  Sobriety is a life-long process and once it is achieved on a daily basis their clients are rewarded with the power of choice coming back into their lives.  Getting sober is one thing, but staying sober is the key.  Their sober support and sober society integration component teach the skills necessary to achieve a long, healthy life of sobriety.  Most of their clients have been separated from society either through treatment or incarceration, and they are not in the habit of sustaining a household of their own.  Through their weekly household budgeting and monthly financial workshops they learn what it takes to manage and prioritize money to supply a household with all of the necessities as well as manage a personal budget.  Their monthly retreats serve the purpose of teaching their clients the importance of having fun in their new life of sobriety.  Their clients enjoy camping, horseback riding, river rafting, boating and hiking in the canyons so that they get the solitude necessary for inner reflection and growth.  The journey that is made by their clients takes a great deal of dedication, however when their clients move on to permanent housing they have achieved stable employment, money and household management skills, life skills, a solid foundation in sobriety and they are leading a new found, spiritually centered life. As an intern you would get the opportunity to work directly with these clients offering support and case management.  Interns would assess client needs and locate community resources that are available to meet those needs.  Interns would be involved in creating and monitoring the progress of client service plans; identifying goals and leading the clients down the path to achieving those goals.  Opportunities to get involved with the Utah County Continuum of Care and all of its agencies would be available.  They often attend committee meetings, workshops and summits on homelessness, mental illness and affordable housing, etc.  There would be great opportunities for networking.  They are gearing up for the next cycle of local, state and federal funding for programs of this type so the chance to learn the inner workings of that process are available. Interns would be needed mostly during the evening hours.  The clients are moving towards self-sufficiency so most of them work or attend treatment during the day.  If an intern showed an interest in attending the Continuum of Care meetings then there would be some day time hours. At the present time the internship would be on a voluntary basis.  The application process and any questions would go through, Angela Waghorne 801-473-3963 or  awaghorne@msn.com . Check with your advisor to get the paperwork needed to set this up as an internship or Practicum.
