Practicum Internship
Practicum is a required course for students in their last semester prior to graduation in social work and is a highly recommended course for psychology students interested in gaining rigorous professional level experience working in human services; including counseling/mentoring, guidance counseling, and other related fields. Students can work at hospitals, schools, court systems, group homes, etc. Students are expected to have direct contact with the people served by the agency they are working with while enrolled in Practicum. Research, grant writing, clerical, babysitting, night security, etc. are not appropriate type of work for Practicum. During a typical (15 week) semester, students are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week at an approved Practicum site. During the summer semester (A Block only) students are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. All necessary training is to be completed PRIOR to the beginning of the semester and training hours do NOT count toward the minimum 90 hours of direct contact hours required for the semester. Students are responsible for finding their own worksite, either volunteer or paid. In addition to work/volunteer hours, students will meet in class to discuss their practicum experiences and integrate the concepts and theories previously learned in other courses. Students also meet weekly in assigned groups. Students will be supervised by an agency representative and will make a written contract with the Practicum professor. For more information see your advisor.
