Introduction to Mentoring

The Mentoring Relationship

For mentoring to be successful, a reciprocal, comfortable relationship is essential between mentor and
mentee (student). Both parties are responsible to work at the relationship to make it successful by being open-minded, respectful and keeping to the expectations they have set for the relationship. Ideally, the mentoring relationship will be mutually beneficial for both the mentor and mentee.

What is a CareerPassport Mentor?

A CareerPassport Mentor is a guide, friend and resource who shares their college experiences and professional career knowledge and expertise to help pave the way for students to succeed at UVU and beyond.

A Mentor Plays Several Important Roles, Including:

Motivator – Expresses belief and confidence in the mentee’s abilities, and encourages the mentee to try new things

Resource – Advises the mentee regarding college and career related topics and preparation and introduces the mentee to new people, places or ideas

Supporter – Encourages open and honest dialogue, and listens to and responds to the needs of the mentee

Coach – Helps the mentee develop and achieve realistic and meaningful goals
