Classical Chinese Literature

Classical Chinese Literature CHST 373G (in Spring 2013 double booked with ENGL 373R)

The course is open for everybody and is taught in English.


Introduces masterpieces of traditional Chinese literature (1500 BCE - 1644 CE) within the historical, cultural, thematic, and aesthetic context. We read in English translation Chinese classics, poetry of Tang and Song dynasty and the novels of late Ming dynasty. Students choose an author to identify with, present him or her in a roleplay, reporting his/her personal view on his/her own works and their place in history.
