Samuel Y. Liang is Assistant Professor of the Humanities in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities at Utah Valley University. He teaches courses in global humanities and Asian and Chinese urbanism. His research focuses on the architecture and urban space of modern and contemporary China. In 2010 he published Mapping Modernity in Shanghai: Space, Gender, and Visual Culture in the Sojourners’ City, 1853-98 (Routledge 2010). He also published dozens of journal articles (in Chinese and English) on modern architecture and Chinese culture. He is currently completing a new book on contemporary Chinese urbanism.

Samuel Y. Liang was born in Anhui, China and educated in Anhui, Shanghai, and New York, where he received a PhD in art history in 2006. Over the last two decades, he has taught architectural history, Asian arts, and Chinese culture in China, the United States, and Great Britain. Before joining UVU, he taught Asian architecture and urbanism at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

MARTIN WOESLER 

Martin Woesler is Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at Utah Valley University. He teaches courses in Chinese language, literature and history. His research interests lie in Chinese cultural identity, the comparison of Western and Chinese culture, the impact of the internet on Chinese society, as well as trends in modern and contemporary Chinese literature. In 2010 he published an introduction to the literary genre of the "Chinese Essay in the 20th Century," hardcover, 470 pp. This book is a result of one of his two one-year appointments as visiting scholar at Harvard University, East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Martin Woesler has published about 20 monographs and 80 small books and text books in Chinese Studies. He edits book series like "Sinica" as well as journals like the "European Journal of Chinese Studies" and the "Bulletin of the German China Association". Martin Woesler has studied and worked 4.5 years in China, at Peking University, Nanking University etc. He obtained his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Bochum University, Germany, and taught at Bochum University, Mainz University, Witten University, and University of Applied Languages Munich, where he served as Dean of Chinese studies since 2007. Prior to coming to Orem, Utah, he lived more than two years in the States, mostly in Cambridge MA, and a short time in Los Angeles CA and Jacksonville FL.

Methods of Language Teaching  is an innovative teaching tool which enables upper level trainee teachers to witness language teaching methods being applied in a classroom.

The DVD shows a series of lessons illustrating methods that have been widely used, as taught by teachers who have made extensive use of these methods in their own classrooms. The methods covered include the Grammar-Translation Method, the Audiolingual Method, the Cognitive Code Approach and the Total Physical Response Method.

Each method presented includes a brief textual description of the historical background, the theories of language and language learning on which the method is based, and an outline of a "typical" lesson. A video demonstration of some of the most common teaching and learning activities associated with the method is also included, as taught by a teacher in an actual classroom setting.

Methods of Language Teaching is primarily designed for teachers and students of language teaching methods, including ESL classes, but is also a useful resource for anyone interested in methods of language teaching.
