Why do an internship?
· Internships are an excellent way to apply for a job. Companies often look at the pool of interns first when a job opens up.
· Some interns are paid, depending on the company, providing a student with extra income while getting college credit.
· Internships provide unique opportunities for work experience and look great on your resume or graduate school application.
The courses:
There are 2 different internship classes, COMM 281R and COMM 481R. These classes can be taken for variable credit, but most students take the standard 3-credit-hour course. The following details are based on the 3-credit hour course.
COMM 281R (lower-division) requires interning 6-10 hours per week for 15 weeks. This course is the prerequisite to COMM 481R. It requires academic assignments typical for a 2000-level course. It is highly recommended that students have at least 9 credits of Communication courses prior to their first internship for academic credit.
COMM 481R (upper-division) requires a prerequisite of COMM 281R. It requires 15-20 internship hours per week for 15 weeks. It requires course work typical for a 4000-level course. This course is recommended for students in their last year of course work.
