Career Options

A Nurse can make a difference in peoples' lives every day.  As nurses we have the privilege of being able to help others every single day and the satisfaction this brings can be its own reward.  A career in nursing brings together scientific knowledge with technical skills, caring, and compassion.  Nursing offers a rewarding combination of high tech and high touch.
Nursing is the largest health care profession in the United States, with 2.6 million Registered Nurses (RNs), and many more are currently needed.  Nurses are the largest single part of any hospital staff.  They are the primary providers of hospital patient care and deliver most of the care in nursing homes and home health.

Utah Valley University Nursing Graduates work in a vide variety of settings including:

  • Hospitals, including: Medical/surgical, obstetrics,
    nurseries, pediatrics, intensive care, coronary care,
    operating room, recovery room, oncology, emergency, 
    trauma, psychiatric/mental health
  • Long-term care centers (rehabilitation, nursing
    homes, hospice)
  • Community health clinics
  • Freestanding outpatient and surgery centers
  • Home Health care
  • School Nurses
  • Nursing Education, including: Colleges and Universities, patient
    educators, staff developers, on-site clinical coordinators
  • Business Health Centers, including: Occupational safety,
    consultants, educators

Employment Outlook

According to American Hospital Association's June 2001 Trend-Watch, 126,000 nurses are needed to fill vacancies at our nation's hospitals.  Today, 75 percent of all hospital vacancies are nursing positions.  Nursing graduates can go anywhere in the United States and get a job after passing the NCLEX-RN exam.  The mean salary for nurses in Utah is $52,310.
