Forty students participating in 26 different categories will represent Utah Valley University in the annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Championships to be held in Kansas City, Mo., June 22-26. For the last eight years UVU has won or finished second in the competition.

UVU won 25 gold medals in the state competition held at Salt Lake Community College in late March, earning those individuals and teams the right to move on to the national event and compete against winners of the other 49 states and four territories.

Also at the state competition, UVU’s David Manning, a professor in the Department of Engineering Graphics & Design Technology, was recognized for his organizational efforts in putting on one of the competitions on the state level.

"When you get to the national level, (the state of) Utah has a huge reputation as does Utah Valley University," said Darin Taylor, director of UVU Skills USA. "When those students get off the plane and walk onto the competition floor everybody is watching them because they know that’s the team that wins this every year."

The overall state and university winner is determined by the combined total of gold, silver and bronze medals won by its students. More than 5,000 students are expected to compete in 91 occupational and leadership skills areas this year.

"We have very viable programs that are excelling on a national level to the point they are regularly beating other universities and colleges from around the U.S.," Taylor said. "We have excellent students, faculty and programs."
