Mission – School of Education

The School of Education prepares competent, caring, and qualified individuals who are ready to assume the role of teacher in elementary and secondary schools, as well as prepares them for further career choices and advancement.

Objective 1: Increase the quality offerings and delivery options in strategic areas in Graduate Studies

  • Goal 1.1: Expand options within the Master of Education degree to include courses for various endorsement programs
    • Task 1.1.1: Add options to the M.Ed. program in Educational Technology
    • Task 1.1.2: Develop course descriptions/syllabi for various teaching endorsements approved by USOE
    • Task 1.1.3: Work with USOE and USHE to establish quality endorsement programs with oversight from the UVU SOE
    • Task 1.1.4: Explore avenues of funding for further development of offerings and delivery options for graduate courses
  • Goal 1.2: Increase the online presence of the M.Ed. program
    • Task 1.2.1: Identify courses and/or elements of courses that are most appropriate for online delivery
    • Task 1.2.2: Identify courses and/or elements of courses that are not appropriate for online delivery
    • Task 1.2.3: Transition to hybrid online format for M.Ed. classes, as appropriate

  • Goal 1.3: Consider additional options for Master's programs
    • Task 1.3.1: Explore the feasibility of offering additional M.Ed. degrees in Education Leadership and Special Education
    • Task 1.3.2: Investigate potential for establishing a Master of Teaching degree to address graduate licensure at secondary and elementary levels

Objective 2: Formalize and engage school partnerships within the framework of the K-16 Alliance

  • Goal 2.1: Formalize partnership agreement with K-16 Alliance members to enhance clinical experience
    • Task 2.1.1: Determine, with K-16 Alliance members, the framework for formalized partnership between UVU, School of Education, and partner schools
    • Task 2.1.2: Coordinate with partners in expanding targeted clinical teaching opportunities/experiences for educator preparation and professional development
    • Task 2.1.3: Ensure that the formalized partnership agreement meet the requirements of new CAEP standards around clinical programs implementation
    • Task 2.1.4:  Establish space in the McKay Education building to facilitate increased clinical collaboration with K-12 Schools
  • Goal 2.2: Engage partners in identifying areas where professional development support would be most needed
    • Task 2.2.1: Provide endorsement courses/professional development for UVU credit at clinical sites
    • Task 2.2.2: Pursue grant funding to develop and maintain content for endorsement programs within partner sites
    • Task 2.2.3: Create dialogue with partnership districts as to what is needed to reach Utah Prosperity 2020 goals
  • Goal 2.3: Develop a campus wide mutually supportive system for sustaining clinical engagement with partner districts
    • Task 2.3.1: Involve Deans from colleges/schools across campus to participate in partnership discussions and planning at least twice a year
    • Task 2.3.2: Implement plans for curricular support and articulation across content as needed within partner sites
    • Task 2.3.3: Implement creative course scheduling to better support clinical and partnership engagement efforts
  • Goal 2.4: Secure the resources necessary to ensure program quality and impact to meet requirements from accrediting and licensure bodies and school partners
    • Task 2.4.1: Pursue ongoing funding to ensure full time content faculty are secured to teach required licensure courses
    • Task 2.4.2: Secure one full-time first point of contact staff position for the SOE advising office to facilitate student retention and completion
    • Task 2.4.3: Secure resources to remodel areas in the SOE building to accommodate a partnership engagement office

Objective 3: Increase professionally focused global engagement opportunities for students and faculty within the School of Education

  • Goal 3.1: Identify strategic regions of the world where engagement will produce the most beneficial professional returns on investment
    • Task 3.1.1: Identify international regions where demographic similarities will scaffold student support in schools
    • Task 3.1.2: Identify international regions where linguistic priorities match those of the state of Utah related to dual immersion programs
    • Task 3.1.3: Identify international regions where cultural immersion will improve the understanding of inclusivity for our graduates lead to lead to a greater understanding of application of culturally responsive pedagogy
    • Task 3.1.4: Provide international professional opportunities for our students that will expand their understanding of schooling and facilitate their ability to be effective teachers in Utah
  • Goal 3.2: Develop a range of international internships to increase engagement for SOE students and professional partnership
    • Task 3.2.1: Increase the number of UVU students who participate in international student teaching
    • Task 3.2.2: Develop short-term international experiences within priority regions to increase UVU student participation
    • Task 3.2.3: Work to identify internal and external funding to sustain international experiences for students and faculty within SOE
  • Goal 3.3: Design and use a variety of models to infuse global issues in course curricula and increase global student engagement
    • Task 3.3.1: Utilize international experiences of students and faculty to enhance course learning
    • Task 3.3.2: Develop goals, objectives, and activities in education courses that integrate global issues
    • Task 3.3.3: Explore and implement course projects (for example, globally oriented service learning or other local/global community formats) that allow SOE local students and faculty to have a global experience

Objective 4: Develop expertise to support implementation of inclusive 21st Century schooling

  • Goal 4.1: Establish a SOE 21st Century initiative to extend the UVU STEM effort. Work with AAC, STEM Deans, and other entities on campus to extend the university-wide STEM initiative to include K-12 STEM Education.
    • Task 4.1.1: Explore options for joint faculty appointments between SOE and other schools and colleges across campus involved with STEM
    • Task 4.1.2: Develop opportunities for co-teaching STEM education focused courses with content faculty and SOE pedagogy faculty
    • Task 4.1.3: Work through the K-16 Alliance to create partnership initiatives around STEM Education
  • Goal 4.2: Examine and rethink STEM Education related requirements for students in SOE in terms of curriculum and courses
    • Task 4.2.1: Conduct a curriculum review to ensure that all education students possess appropriate knowledge and evaluate student dispositions towards STEM teaching and learning
    • Task 4.2.2: Implement an integrated understanding of instructional strategies related to "competency and project-based learning" as a way of assimilating STEM with reading/writing and content area instruction within the construct of inclusive 21st Century teaching and learning
  • Goal 4.3: Collaborate with K-12 schools to implement inclusive 21st Century Education initiatives
    • Task 4.3.1: Study opportunities for inclusive 21st century school innovations in selected partnership schools
    • Task 4.3.2: Involve K-12 teachers in developing expertise for designing inclusive 21st Century teaching and learning
    • Task 4.3.3: Visit 21st Century Schools to help in constructing our innovation strategy for working with our partner schools
