  • Using Other Clients

    • Using a third party email client

      • The following options are available for those users that want to access their UVU mail from a 3rd party client or from an Outlook client that is hosting email from another employer.
IMAP is available for those 3rd party clients that do not support Exchange protocols (Thunderbird for example). IMAP can also be used on Outlook for those employees that may want to access their UVU email in the same Outlook client that they use with another employer. In order to send mail using this protocol the user will need to either VPN into UVU’s network or utilize an accessible SMTP mail sender.
POP3 – This is a protocol for use with 3rd party clients. It is strongly recommended not to use this protocol. Changes made on the client are not reflected on the Exchange servers and email is usually downloaded to the client computer and removed from Exchange. Loss of email can occur if the client experiences some sort of device failure or loss. In order to send mail using this protocol the user will need to either VPN into UVU’s network or utilize an accessible SMTP mail sender.
        • Exchange Protocol – This is the preferred method for mobile devices, supported 3rd party clients (Mac Mail for example), and Outlook. There are no issues with outbound email while using this protocol.
OWAOutlook Web App can be used to access your UVU email from virtually any web enabled device. This interface provides nearly all the same functionality of Outlook 2010. There are no issues with outbound email while using this protocol.
    • Using a third party mail host (i.e. Gmail)

      • Some 3rd party mail hosts (such as Gmail) provide a way to connect to your UVU mail via POP3 and display the email in their client interface. This is an excellent way for those users that wish to see their UVU email in the Gmail account. In order to send mail using this protocol the user will need to utilize Gmail’s SMTP mail sender. Here’s the steps to do this in Gmail:
        1. Open a web browser and login to your Gmail account.
        2. Click the Settings link in the upper right-hand corner of the Gmail interface and click Settings.
        3. Click Accounts and Import tab
        4. See the Check mail using POP3 field? Click the Add POP3 email account button
        5. Enter your UVU email address and click next.
        6. Type your UVID in the user name field and enter your password in the password field
        7. Change the POP Server field to say owa.uvu.edu and pick port 995.
        8. Decide if you want to leave a copy of the message on the Exchange Servers
        9. Check the box to Always use a secure connection (SSL)
        10. Decide how you want to set the rest of the settings
        11. You will need to use Google’s SMTP servers to send mail from your UVU account.
