Welcome to The Center for Engaged Learning!

Dr. Christianson

Welcome to the Center for Engaged Learning Web page. Each individual at the center desires to assist you as you look for and participate in engaged learning and teaching opportunities. The Center has been given the charge to collaborate with academic affairs as well as student affairs to help create opportunities for service and engagement within the region. As stated by President William A. Sederburg, we desire to “connect the professional interests of our students with the issues facing their generation and their community, and connect the campus with the broader community.” All of us at the university and in the community can participate in the accomplishment of this goal by emphasizing engaged learning in everything we do. Please spend some time on our site and then allow us to answer any questions that may arise. We look forward to a collaborative effort to not only promote engaged learning through community but to become committed stewards of place, people of integrity and professionally competent in all we do.

Sincerely, Jack R. Christianson

Our mission is to become more engaged in and connected with the local community and mold the institution to develop an educational model that is community-based once it becomes a university.

The CEL model has three principal components, with regard to its students and employees, made up of three P's:

  • People of Integrity (e.g. ethics, leadership and character)
  • Stewards of Place (e.g. serving the region, bolstering economic development, service learning, cultural activities, and global awareness)
  • Professionally Competent (e.g. quality teaching, up to date scholarship, faculty mentorship, advising, and internships)

These three components combine to ultimately produce an atmosphere, not only of learning, but of engaged learning geared at connecting the classroom with the community and providing students with real-world, hands-on training with community partners. This, Sederburg said, is critical to the mission of a regional state university and the future of UVU.
