Gayla Amosa, Academic Advisor for Basic Composition/ESL

Gayla AmosaOur new Academic Advisor for Basic Composition and ESL, is Gayla Amosa. She is from the North Shore of Oahu, in Hawaii. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Design/Art from California State University Dominguez Hills, a teaching degree from Brigham Young University Hawaii in secondary education and a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Phoenix. She taught Art at Kahuku High in Hawaii for eight years and was a counselor there for the last ten years. Gayla enjoys spending time with family, camping, swimming, and hiking. She also loves reading good books and writing. What she likes best about working at UVU with the ESL and basic comp students and staff and faculty is the great friendly atmosphere. She says, "Everyone is so welcoming and helpful. It just feels like home."

Elizabeth Nield, Coordinator for Basic Composition/ESL and Community Ed ESL Courses

Elizabeth NieldIs from Cancun, Mexico and she has a B.A. from LA SALLE Cancun University in Business Administration. She has experience in human relations, customer service, and quality control for 8 years at hotels in Mexico and in United States. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, snowmobiling, swimming, camping, hiking, and watching movies. Also, Elizabeth likes to work for Basic Composition and ESL department because she gets to meet interesting students and the different cultures that they are from.

Laurie Toro, Administrative Assistant for BC/ESL

Laurie ToroLaurie grew up in California and lived in NYC for several years before settling here in Utah. She received her B.A. in English from UVU, with a  literature emphasis and is currently working on her Master's in Business Administration. Laurie is fascinated by and loves to research the way language, cultural and media formulate our perceptions of the world around us. She is also incredibly passionate about all forms of art and can be found at galleries, museums, theatre's, reading a good book or with friends and family during her free time.

Cassandra Jex, Student Assistant for English Conversation Club

Cassandra JexBorn in Nashville and raised in Utah, Cassie is the second oldest of 6 children. She recently graduated with a BA in Linguistics from BYU. She is studying Deaf Studies here at UVU with hopes of being an ASL interpreter. Cassie loves languages and traveling and ice cream most of all.

Juan Carlos Fuentes, Student Assistant for Basic Composition and ESL

Juan Carlos FuentesIs from Mexico City and he grew up into a lovely family. He is the oldest of five brothers, he studied Accounting in Mexico, and at UVU he is studying Business Management. He likes to organize, create and to be involved in projects. Juan enjoys having time with his family, eat together, and talk with them. Also, he likes to watch movies with his friends, play in the snow, swim, and play basketball.

Giovanna Jan Reyes Cruz, Student Assistant for Basic Composition and ESL

Giovanna Jan Reyes CruzWas born in Mexico City, but grew up in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. She moved to Utah 2 years ago, where she learned English. She adores her family and friends. She is also a good listener, sympathetic, and she loves to help and serve people. She is majoring in psychology, which is one of her biggest passions, and her goal is to help people to reach a higher level of happiness and satisfaction with their lives.

Ahmed Amri, Student Assistant for Basic Composition and ESL

AhmedWas born in Morocco in North Africa and raised in Spain. I am influenced by both cultures, Eastern and Western. Ahmed learned a lot from both cultures; this experience made me have a cultural and personal wealth. He has traveled extensively throughout his life to Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. Also, he speaks several languages, including Arabic, French, Spanish, and Maghreb. He had the opportunity to work several years at the United Nations to keep the peace in the Middle East. Ahmed is a fan of Real Madrid, he likes sports and good food.

Jared Alvarez, Student Assistant for Basic Composition and ESL

JaredWas born in Maracaibo and was raised in Caracas, Venezuela. He is the oldest of 3 siblings. He graduated from Facilities and Property Management from BYU and is taking accounting courses at UVU in preparation for a masters degree. He likes managing projects, helping others and making a difference. He enjoys time with family, learning different languages, learning about different cultures, sports, outdoor activities, music, and traveling.

Lilly Citlalli Munguia, Student Assistant for ESL Community Education

Lilly Citlalli MunguiaIs from Mexico City, she is a junior in the Community Health Program at UVU. She graduated with an Associate of Applied Science degree and a Medical Assistant Certification from LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lilly enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and spending time admiring the beautiful landscapes in Utah. She also loves music, dance, folklore, art and learn from different cultures.
