UVU COMMUNITY EDUCATION ESL PROGRAM CURRICULUM
LOW-BEGINNING LEVEL:
Basic Speaking & Vocabulary
This class is for beginning students with little or no previous English experience. The class focuses on conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and listening. Course includes computer lab and interaction with native English speakers.
Basic Grammar/Speaking/Writing
For beginning students with little or no previous English experience. The class focuses on learning basic grammar through speaking and writing simple sentences. Course includes computer lab.
HIGH-BEGINNING LEVEL:
Grammar 1
This class is for high-beginning students with some experience with English grammar. Students will learn to correctly use English grammar
structures through speaking in short conversations and writing simple and complex sentences. Course includes computer lab.
Listening/Speaking 1
This class is for beginning students with some experience in English. Class focuses on conversation, vocabulary building and speaking. Course includes computer lab and interactions with native English speakers.
Writing 1
This class is for beginning students with some experience writing sentences in English. Course focuses on spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, organization, and idea development.
LOW-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:
Grammar 2
For students with low-intermediate proficiency in English. The class focuses on using correct verb tenses, word forms, and connectors in both speech and writing. Introduces modal auxiliaries, conditional sentences and adjective clauses. Includes computer lab.
Writing 2
This class is for students with low-intermediate written English. Class introduces writing conventions including applied grammar and usage, word choice, style, organization, idea development, and technical accuracy. Course explores short academic writing tasks and includes weekly use of the ESL Program computer lab where low intermediate writing skills are emphasized and practiced.
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:
Listening/Speaking 3
This class is for high-intermediate speakers of English. Class focuses on expanding speaking ability so students can comfortably converse on abstract topics incorporating complex grammar structures and more advanced vocabulary. Class also focuses on listening to academic lectures and media programs. The class studies high-intermediate concepts of pronunciation, intonation stress, and English phonics. Course includes weekly use of language lab and contact with native speakers.
Grammar 3
This class is for students with high-intermediate English. Class focuses on helping students use correct speech and writing forms and patterns, verb tenses, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, sentence connectives, and related forms. Course expands usage of modal auxiliaries, conditional sentence usage, and adjective clauses; also the class introduces noun and adverbial clauses.
