ESL 0910 Listening/Speaking Level I

UVU Course Catalog Description

  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Introduces concepts of pronunciation, intonation, stress, and English phonics
  • Explores use of simple statements, questions, and commands on familiar topics
  • Introduces students to academic lectures and conversations
  • Includes weekly use of the UVU Language Lab where beginning conversation skills are emphasized and practiced

Course Objectives

This course
  • focuses on basic conversational skills such as
    • giving greetings,
    • making requests,
    • asking questions,
    • giving and asking simple directions,
    • showing agreement and disagreement,
    • apologizing, etc.;
  • gives practice in
    • pronunciation,
    • intonation,
    • stress and
    • English phonics;
  • introduces students to academic
    • vocabulary,
    • lectures and
    • conversations;
  • includes weekly use of the UVU Computer Lab where beginning conversation skills are emphasized and practiced.
