ESL 0930 Writing Level I

UVU Course Catalog Description

  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English.
  • Introduces English writing conventions, including applied grammar and usage, word choice, style, organization, idea development, and technical accuracy.
  • Introduces students to simple academic writing tasks.
  • Includes weekly use of the UC Computer Classroom where beginning writing skills are emphasized and practiced.

Course Objectives

This course

  • introduces students to beginning level academic writing tasks such as
    • writing a simple, multiple-paragraph academic text of 100-400 words;
    • creating a correct simple thesis statement;
    • using standard essay format such as
      • paragraph indentation,
      • title,
      • double-spacing, etc.
    • using basic transition forms such as
      • time,
      • addition,
      • contrast, etc.
  • helps students learn to use correct methods for creating basic email messages in English;
  • includes weekly use of the UVU Computer Classroom where beginning writing and computer skills are emphasized and practiced.
