ESL 1210 Listening Speaking Level ll

UVU Course Catalog Description

  •  Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Studies low-intermediate concepts of pronunciation intonation, stress, and English phonics
  • Expands use of simple statements, questions, and commands on familiar topics as well as academic lectures, and conversations.
  • Includes weekly use of the UVU Language Lab where low-intermediate conversation skills are emphasized and practiced

Course Objectives

This course
  • develops upper-beginning and low-intermediate skills in
    • pronunciation,
    • note-taking and comprehension of main ideas from class lectures
    • leading small group discussions,
    • giving opinions on topics discussed in class,
    • figuring out word meanings by studying
      • word parts,
      • word families and
      • context;
  • helps increase
    • understanding of idioms,
    • usage of phrasal verbs, and
    • language fluency on a low-intermediate level;
  •  develops conversational skills such as
    •     showing and getting attention,
    • changing the subject,
    • showing disagreement,
    • repeating and rephrasing discussion points,
    • giving complex apologies, and
    • taking leave;
  • includes weekly use of the UVU language lab where low-intermediate conversation skills are emphasized and practiced.
