ESL 1240 Grammar Level ll

UVU Course Catalog Description

  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval 
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Studies
    • low-intermediate English usage,
    • correct speech and writing forms and patterns,
    •  verb tenses and their related structures, and
    • use of nouns,
      •  pronouns,
      • adverbs,
      •  sentence connectives,
      • descriptives, and
      • related forms
  • Introduces modal auxiliaries, conditional sentence usage, phrases, and adjective clauses

Course Objectives

This course
  • develops use of
    • comparatives and superlatives,
    • appropriate modals with accompanying verb structures,
    • past and present progressive tenses,
    • present perfect tense with accompanying structures,
    • appropriate noun determiners,
  • introduces students to gerunds and infinitive structures;
  • teaches students to 
    • distinguish between will and be going to in future tense,
    • form subject and object who- questions with complexity appropriate to low-intermediate level,
    • form tag questions,
    • combine sentences with complexity appropriate to low-intermediate level,
    • show basic knowledge of definite and indefinite articles,
    • show basic knowledge of prepositions,
    • show basic knowledge of the grammar of phrasal verbs
