ESL 1310 Listening/Speaking Level III

UVU Course Catalog Description

  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Studies high-intermediate concepts of pronunciation, intonation, stress, and English phonics
  • Expands use of simple statements, questions, and commands on familiar topics as well as academic lectures
  • Emphasizes active participation in academic and social conversations
  • Includes weekly use of the UVU Language Lab where high-intermediate conversation skills are emphasized and practiced

Course Objectives

This course

  • develops high-intermediate skills in
    • pronunciation,
    • taking notes from academic lectures,
    • giving short, informal presentations,
    • using academic vocabulary,
    • participating in an academic debate and showing the ability to
      • state a premise and
      • use supporting details to defend it, and
    • discussing an abstract topic in a casual conversation at an adult level;
  • helps increase
    • language fluency on a high-intermediate level,
    • understanding and usage of idioms and slang,
    • usage of phrasal verbs, and
    • vocabulary from cultural observation and discussions of current events;
  • includes weekly use of the UVU language lab where high-intermediate conversation skills are emphasized and practiced.
