  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Studies high-intermediate vocabulary, word attack skills, English dictionary usage, and comprehension skills
  • Encourages reading for pleasure and for information
  • Practices academic and iob-related reading skills
  • Emphasizes extensive reading

Course Objectives

This course

  • helps students read texts outside of class to increase vocabulary and comprehension;
  • develops mapping skills to increase reading comprehension;
  • gives practice in using appropriate speeds when reading high-intermediate level texts;
  • increases fluency through extensive reading;
  • builds students’ academic and job-related reading skills such as
    • reading texts appropriate to high-intermediate level written for native speakers at an 80% comprehension level,
    • identifying the main idea of a text,
    • skimming and scanning,
    • understanding the differences between major and minor supporting details,
    • making complex inferences based on class texts,
    • Interpreting various types of symbols including words, pictures, icons, charts, graphs, etc. to determine meaning,
    • using vocabulary in context strategies to figure out definitions of words.
