Course Objectives
This
course
-
helps students read texts outside
of class to increase vocabulary and comprehension;
-
develops mapping skills to increase reading
comprehension;

gives practice in using appropriate speeds when
reading high-intermediate level texts;
-
increases fluency through extensive reading;
-
builds students’ academic and job-related reading
skills such as
-
reading texts appropriate to
high-intermediate level written for native speakers at an 80%
comprehension level,
-
identifying the main idea of a
text,
-
skimming and scanning,
-
understanding the differences
between major and minor supporting details,
-
making complex inferences based
on class texts,
-
Interpreting various types of
symbols including words, pictures, icons, charts, graphs, etc. to
determine meaning,
-
using vocabulary in context strategies to figure out
definitions of words.
