are emphasized and practiced
Course Objectives
This
course
-
introduces students to high-intermediate
academic pre-writing tasks such as
-
choosing a topic appropriate to
this level (comparable to a high school student);
-
creating a thesis statement
containing a topic, stance, and plan, and
-
focusing a thesis based on
audience expectations;
-
develops high-intermediate drafting skills, such as
-
tailoring the traditional essay
structure to a specific audience at an introductory level;
-
reliably using a traditional
essay structure format
-
using common language structures
to support a thesis statement,
-
using transitions within and
between paragraphs and ideas,
-
incorporating outside sources
into student-authored texts, and
-
using journalistic and other
informal citation of sources;
-
develops skills in revising drafts of student-authored
texts such as,
-
incorporating teacher and self-feedback
into texts,
-
recognizing and correcting the
most common errors in academic writing, and
-
using the computer to create a
paper appropriate for submission in a university level course;

encourages use of ESL tutoring services and the UVU
writing lab;

includes weekly use of the University College
Computer Classroom where high-intermediate writing and computer skills are
emphasized and practiced.
