ESL 2110 Advanced Listening/Speaking

UVU Course Catalog Description

  • Prerequisite(s): Department Approval
  • For students whose native language is other than English
  • Studies advanced concepts of pronunciation, intonation, stress, English phonics,
  • critical thinking, and vocabulary,
  • Provides opportunities for students to build confidence in public speaking
  • Emphasizes speaking and listening in advanced academic situations such as note-taking and participating in class discussions and debates
  • Includes weekly use of the UVU Language Lab where advanced conversation skills are emphasized and practiced
  • Satisfies AAS Humanities requirements

Course Objectives

This course

  • helps students
    • understand an academic lecture (80%),
    • understand and recognize varying registers,
    • state and support an academic position on an abstract topic,
    • build academic vocabulary,
    • increase fluency,
    • give a formal academic presentation,
    • understand journalistic (current events) and cultural content,
    • expand understanding of idioms and slang, and
    • reduce accent for understandability;
  • includes weekly use of the UVU language lab where advanced conversation skills are emphasized and practiced.
