Course Objectives
This
course helps students

identify the main idea of an
academic text

differentiate between major and
minor supporting details,

restate/paraphrase academic
theses in their own words,

evaluate texts critically to
determine academic appropriateness,

evaluate text critically to
determine the strengths and weaknesses of an author’s argument,

recognize some very common
informal logical fallacies,

combine informed personal opinion
with academic texts,

understand and make both simple
and complex inferences,

determine and maintain
appropriate reading speed for varying texts,

expand vocabulary through
contextual clues,
