Course Objectives
This
course
-
introduces students to advanced
academic pre-writing tasks such as
-
choosing a topic appropriate to
college level writing;
-
using a variety of techniques to
generate and appropriate essay topic, and
-
analyze the audience and purpose
in fulfilling writing assignments;
-
develops advanced drafting skills, such as
-
creating written assignments
appropriate to the college level,
-
understanding and using library
facilities for research,
-
integrating and documenting
outside sources into student-authored texts,
-
creating an academically
appropriate thesis statement, and
-
supporting a thesis statement
using common rhetorical styles;
-
develops skills in revising and editing drafts of
student-authored texts such as,
-
practicing self-feedback on
papers,
-
understanding and implementing
peer revision strategies,
-
recognizing and correcting the
most highly stigmatized errors in academic writing, and
-
using the computer to create a
paper appropriate for submission in a university level course;

introduces students to differing formats used in
academic writing;

encourages use of ESL tutoring services and the UVU
writing lab;

includes weekly use of the University College
Computer Classroom where high-intermediate writing and computer skills are
emphasized and practiced.
