ESL 2150 College Prep/TOEFL

Course description

This course

  • focuses on integration of all four language skills;
  • prepares students to pass the TOEFL test;
  • provides ample opportunities to practice integrated
    • speaking,
    • reading,
    • writing and
    • listening tasks
    commonly encountered in academic settings.

Course Objectives

  • Take effective notes from lectures and text
  • Use wide range of words and expressions used in academic discourse
  • Complete academic tasks that integrate all four skills under timed conditions
  • Scan academic texts that identify main ideas and supporting details
  • Infer the meaning of unknown technical words from context
  • Draw conclusions based on what is implied in the text
  • Write a well organized essay supporting an opinion under timed conditions.
  • Recognize the rhetorical function and purpose of a passage as well as author's stance
  • Synthesize and summarize information from various sources
