Q. What is a Learning Circle?

A. A Learning Circle is a group of faculty led by a facilitator which meets together regularly to read and discuss a selected book.

Q. How can a Learning Circle benefit me?

A. In support of the engaged learning philosophy Learning Circles offer an avenue for faculty to participate together in this type of learning. Faculty construct and fine-tune their knowledge by participating in group discussions and collaborating with other faculty members.

Q. Who are the facilitators of the Learning Circles?

A. This fall Anton Tolman a professor from Behavioral Sciences and the Director of the Faculty Center will facilitate one group on selected Wednesday’s from 11:00-Noon. K.D. Taylor a professor from Developmental Math will facilitate the other group on selected Tuesday’s from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Q. What books have been selected this semester?

A. Anton will be covering Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice by Maryellen Weimer. This book offers a comprehensive work on the topic of learner-centered teaching in the college and university classroom. K.D. will be covering Making a Difference: Personal Essays by Today’s College Teachers. This book is a collection of moving personal essays that developmental college instructors write about the challenges and rewards of teaching. The essays serve as a tribute to the teachers and their students, providing an inspiring reminder that it is possible to make a real difference in a person’s life.
