The Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence (FCTE) at Utah Valley University is dedicated to providing support to enhance teaching and student learning in ways that advance UVU's mission and core themes of Inclusion, Engagement, Seriousness, and Student Success. In order to accomplish this, we provide services in three distinct areas: Core Services, Curricular Engagement, and Co-Curricular/Extra-Curricular Engagement. We have a list of frequently requested events and workshops for departments, but we also provide customized and individualized services for faculty, departments, and colleges/schools. Many of the FCTE's core programs (e.g. Teaching Academy) integrate elements from several of these areas. Below are examples of the types of services provided in each area; these lists are not comprehensive.

Type 1: Core Practices 

 Core Practices:

  • Integrated Course Design (includes incorporation of ELOs and Core Themes into course objectives, etc.)
  • Instructor Presence and Connecting with Students (e.g. presentation skills)
  • Improving Powerpoint presentations
  • Effective Lecturing
  • Formative & Summative classroom assessment (includes how to design and improve multiple-choice exams)
  • Pedagogical approaches to large classrooms

  • Creating an Inclusive Classroom (working with diversity, inclusive pedagogies) -- usually done collaboratively with other organizations on campus

Type 2: Curricular Engagement 

Engaged Pedagogies Including:

  • Learner-Centered Teaching

  • Problem-Based Learning approaches
  • Other Collaborative Learning Strategies
  • Case Studies and Simulations
  • Improving student writing, oral communication, critical thinking, and other ELO-related skills Support for GE programs and ELOs 
  • Support for Campus Assessment activities (including ePortfolios)
  • Departments: Curriculum Development and Integration of ELOs
  • Departments & Colleges/Schools: Improving High Drop or High Failure Courses

Type 3: Co-Curricular & Extra-Curricular Engagement

  • High Impact Educational Practice (HIPs) -- usually in collaboration with other organizations on campus (e.g. service learning, Learning Communities, CGIE)
  • Incorporating Co-Curricular Events into Course Design

Student engaged scholarship including:

  • Models of best practices in student scholarship
  • Effectively mentoring student scholarly work
  • Establishing and monitoring longitudinal student teams
  • Student scholarship as pedagogy for the discipline

Departments:

  • Defining Engagement Within the Discipline
  • Support for Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee (SCAC)
