Cost of Attendance

Financial planning is an important part of your success at Utah Valley University and your future. It is important to consider what it will cost you to attend school and to determine how you might pay for your education.

The foundation of federal student aid begins with your Cost of Attendance, which is an estimate of what it will cost you to attend school. It sets the limit on the total aid you may receive. You may receive federal student aid, Utah Valley University scholarships, scholarships outside of Utah Valley University, and other Estimated Financial Assistance up to your Cost of Attendance. If you receive assistance beyond your Cost of Attendance, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office must return federal student aid to the U.S. Department of Education, and return private education loan funds to the lender, until your assistance no longer exceeds your Cost of Attendance. The one exception is if you only receive a Federal Pell Grant and no other federal aid or private education loans.

Per federal regulations and U.S. Department of Education guidance, the Cost of Attendance can include tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, personal (miscellaneous) costs, and minimal transportation costs to and from school (the purchase of a car is excluded from this provision). On a case-by-case basis, the Cost of Attendance might also include: an educational loan fee, dependent care, computer purchase, disability costs, etc. If you are awarded a Direct Loan, your Cost of Attendance will include the educational loan fee. If you would like your Cost of Attendance to include dependent care, computer purchase, disability costs, etc. you may complete the Cost of Attendance Appeal located on the Forms webpage of the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office website.

Your Cost of Attendance will be established based on the following:

  • Tuition: as notated on the Tuition Tables for the academic year.  Undergraduate and graduate students have different tuition amounts. Resident and Nonresident students also have different tuition amounts.
  • General Student Fees:as notated on the Tuition Tables for the academic year.  Undergraduate and graduate students have different fee amounts.
  • Books and Supplies: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.
  • Minimal Transportation: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.
  • Minimal Miscellaneous Expenses: is the same average costs for all students based on a survey conducted by the Utah Valley University Institutional Research and Information Department.
  • Room and Board: estimates are based on the response you provided for the Housing Plans question on the  FAFSA application.  If you stated you are living at home with your parents, your estimates will be lower.

Federal student aid is subject to regulations that limit the amount of aid that may be awarded to you. Your award may not be enough to pay your tuition and fees or cover your full Cost of Attendance. You may need to find other resources to help fund your education.

Due to higher tuition amounts, generally Nonresident students will not receive a federal student aid award that will cover all of their tuition and fees. If you are a Nonresident student, be prepared to pay for a portion of your educational expenses

What Might Impact Your Cost of Attendance

  • If you are attending less than half-time, an adjustment will be made to your Cost of Attendance. This adjustment will result in you returning funds to Utah Valley University that you have already received.
  • Failure to accurately disclose outside Estimated Financial Assistance (i.e. scholarships, tribal grants, tuition assistance, etc.) may result in funding that exceeds your Cost of Attendance (overaward). You will be required to repay overawards regardless of when they occur. We encourage you to notify the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office of any outside Estimated Financial Assistance so that you are not overawarded.
  • If you are a Nonresident student and receive residency status, your Cost of Attendance will decrease which will impact your financial aid. You will be required to repay overawards created by changes in your residency status.
  • Certain programs might have additional course fees, determined by individual departments, that are included in general fees. This could increase the cost for you to attend Utah Valley University. We encourage you to visit the website, review the catalog, or call the department for which your academic program is under to determine additional costs.

Can You Increase Your Cost of Attendance?

If you have expenses that are more than the allotted Cost of Attendance amount, you may complete the Cost of Attendance Appeal located on the Forms page of the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office website.
