for the Freshman Reading Selection of 2016-2017

Have you read any good books lately?

The office of First Year Experience and Student Retention is beginning the review process for our Freshman Reading 2016-2017 book selection. If you have a book that meets the selection criteria listed below, please email the book title, author name, and a brief statement on why you believe the book would be an appropriate selection, to Candice Morris by January 31, 2015.

Recommended books will be reviewed by our Faculty Connections and Academic Experience Committee members. During a rigorous review process, the committee will ultimately select 5 books which will be recommended to President Holland who will make the final book selection.

Book Selection Criteria:

  • The book content must carry across multiple academic disciplines.
  • The book should grab the reader's interest within the first 25 pages.
  • The overall book length should not exceed 300 pages.
  • Controversial topics or content may be introduced, but books that contain gratuitously graphic content or language will not be considered.

Book recommendations may be submitted by UVU faculty, staff, students and members of the community at large.

Additional Book Selection Criteria:

Additional criteria is considered when selecting the final books to be submitted to President Holland:

  • Book must be available in paperback at the time of purchase.
  • The author (or central book figure if the selection is a biography or non-fiction work) must be alive and available for a campus visit (and reasonably priced).
