Position Summary:
Security awareness and monitoring of security procedures and practices. Development of security policies for the computing systems of Utah Valley University. Develop and publish a Business Resumption Plan for UVU computing systems. Determine the efficacy of the campus-wide infrastructure. Maintain awareness of changes in industry to ensure adequate security for new administrative systems.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Monitors Info Technology systems and other paper document processing systems to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Investigates complaints of non-compliance.
  • Performs risk and cost benefit analysis to determine appropriate level of security risks.
  • Investigates foreseeable internal/external information security risks and report on noted irregularities/risks.
  • Enforces the UVU sponsored training to conform to existing policies.
  • Informs campus students and employees of UVU security policies and practices.
  • Prepares and publishes papers and/or articles on good security practice for use by UVU employees and others.
  • Reviews, on a timely basis, the various reports and logs available.
  • Develops standardized, campus-wide info security policies and procedures that effect several departments on campus.
  • Reviews and is aware of security features of new computing systems, ensure they meet requirements of existing policies.
  • Review and propose changes to existing policy as conditions warrant.
  • Counsels with and advises campus administrators on policy issues and campus wide security.
  • Prepares, maintains, and publishes procedures and best practices to back up new policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Conducts and sponsors security lectures and training programs to raise client awareness in regards to the safeguarding of data.
  • Serves on systems, campus-wide and/or outside organization/committee(s) and their training programs to develop policy.
  • Coordinates with CIO to ensure that security policies have been put in place at the administrative level.
  • Checks requirements of various departments at UVU in the event of a major disruption of computing/networking services.
  • Develops and maintains contingency plans to provide timely business resumption if such an event occurs.
  • Provides contingency plans to the appropriate managers.
  • Collaborates with internal auditor(s) in preparing an audit schedule of security issues.
  • Verifies that audits are performed on a regular basis.
  • Enforces campus compliance with information security laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Serves as primary liaison with various officials including, but not limited to, Director of Public Safety, Director of Internal Advantage, and CIO.
  • Serves as liaison with other campus ISO's, outside auditors, and the organizations related to information security issues.
  • Monitors electronic devices to provide intrusion detection and identify possible security breaches.
  • Coordinates and conduct vulnerability assessments.
  • Attends classes and seminars as required to maintain a high level of proficiency in fields of computing security.
  • Collaborates with other information security professionals and organizations like Utah Saints and The SANS Institute.
  • Prepares documentation to augment vendor materials that include local enhancement and implementations.
  • Identifies and reduce security vulnerabilities.
  • Maintains awareness of pertinent laws, rules, and regulations.  

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • N/A

Special Requirements of the Position:
  • Certification as Certified Info Systems Security Professional(CISSP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer(MCSE), Certified Novell Engineer (CNE), and/or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Tech Management,or related field and six years of network administration experience or network security; or any combination of education and/or experience totaling ten years. 

  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Knowledge of organizational development theory and practices.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Knowledge of local and national issues and trends in managed care and primary health care.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Strategic planning skills.
  • Knowledge of facilities and asset management methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computerized information systems used in financial and/or accounting applications.
  • Knowledge of medical billing procedures.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Knowledge of cost control principles and practices.
  • Ability to establish, direct, and enforce administrative and financial control systems, policies, and procedures in a related operating environment.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies and procedures within specialty area.
