Position Summary:

Under the direction of the department coordinator, assists in the training of the student newspaper staff.  Coordinate the training of the student newspaper advertising staff which includes training in sales approaches and techniques as well as securing advertising and maintaining communication with newspaper layout team to facilitate appropriate ad placement.  Manages and maintains records required for the office and uses campus systems to track transactions and follow-up with clients.


Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Assists in training the student staff in writing for, and editing a university student newspaper.
  • Provides scheduled journalistic writing training for new staff members, on an individual and group basis.
  • Facilitates regular opportunities for seasoned staff members to mentor less experienced students. 
  • Assists student editors in creating, editing and maintaining a training manual which can be utilized in training current as well as future staff members. 
  • Coordinates weekly with Editor in chief and section editors to budget editorial content and advertising space for each issue. 
  • Coordinates training opportunities for student staff, such as national college newspaper conferences. 
  • Assists in recruiting and training an ever changing student advertising staff.
  • Provides sales staff with the skills and techniques necessary  to succeed in ad sales.
  • Supervises efforts of student sales staff to insure proper training and communication of sales opportunities and objectives.
  • Facilitates communication between sales staff and executive media staff to insure accurate correlation of ad sales and print space. 
  • Trains sales staff appropriate methods of procuring advertising copy, designing / correcting advertisements to fit advertisers and / or newspaper design requirements, generating and maintaining sales contracts, and laying out classified advertising. 
  • Maintains sales records, such as contracts, insertion orders and ad placement correspondence.
  • Prepares sales sheets, advertising invoices, advertisement proof mailings, deposit records, UVU departmental budget transfer records. Work closely with UVU Business Office to collect ad revenue from clients.
  • Maintains detailed advertising sales records, contracts and collections correspondence as well as any other records and documents as directed by the coordinator. 
  • Provides scheduled journalistic writing training for new staff members, on an individual and group basis.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • N/A

Special Requirements of the Position:
  • Able to work with staff until weekly issue of the paper is completed.
  • Able to work with strong student leaders in a stressful setting.
  • Travel with students on training conferences and meetings.

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Sales, Communications, Journalism, English or a degree closely related to summary of duties OR an associate’s degree as described above and two years of experience closely related to the summary of duties totaling six years. 

  • Ability to train a student staff in writing for, and editing a university student newspaper.
  • Ability to facilitate regular opportunities for seasoned staff members to mentor less experienced students. 
  • Ability to train student newspaper staff editors, thus empowering them to govern their section reporters and designers. 
  • Ability to coordinate weekly with Editor in chief and section editors to budget editorial content and advertising space  for each issue. 
  • Skill in coordinating training opportunities for student staff, such as national college newspaper conferences. 
  • Skill in recruiting and training an ever changing student advertising staff.
  • Knowledge of sales techniques to  be able succeed in ad sales. 
  • Skill in maintaining sales records, such as contracts, insertion orders and ad placement correspondence. 
  • Skill in generating advertising invoicing and proof mailings for advertising clients. 
  • Ability to coordinate office expenditures and inventory. 
  • Knowledge of national college newspaper conferences and the ability  to serve as a positive liaison between the UVU community and the student newspaper staff.  
  • Ability to use newspaper production software such as Microsoft Word, PhotoShop, Acrobat, InDesign and standard office equipment (copier, fax, telephone, etc.)
