Advises new, prospective, transfer and continuing Latino/Hispanic and Multicultural students in General Academic majors and general education courses.  This includes developmental and career advising to help students develop educational plans toward graduation. Emphasis is placed on striving to meet Hispanic/Latino student cultural/ethnic needs.

 

• Maintain an advising caseload of incoming and continuing undergraduate Latino students in terms of advisement and other school-related support.  Assist students with the enrollment, registration, and financial aid processes.
• Maintain student advising records using computer applications relevant for file maintenance and organization of case load.
• Provide advisement to Latino students and parents concerning financial aid matters in federal, state, institutional, and self-help assistance. 
• Respond to informational requests from potential Latino students, staff, and high school counselors.
• Provide information, assistance and referrals to student support services.
• Provides accurate program information to continuing and prospective students in p to assist advisees in managing their college experience. erson, via telephone and email and on site at UVU.  
• Interprets placement test scores and assist student in appropriate course placement.
• Advises students in academic difficulty, administration and staff on student academic problems, issues and concerns. removes holds, etc. to facilitate their progress.
• Advocates and problem solves with faculty.
• Represent the department on any relevant University committees, departmental committees, or professional associations/organizations as needed and/or assigned.
• Serve as a member of the Advisement Forum and attend and participate in meetings, activities, and events of the forum.

• Fluency in both English and Spanish is required.

 

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree and two years experience related to the summary of duties. 

• Knowledge of student development, and the ability to assist students develop effective academic plans and career and life goals, in order to promote student retention and academic success.
• Knowledge of recruiting and retention strategies for Latino students.
• Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements. 
• Knowledge of student advising and techniques including content, curriculum, and graduation requirements and the ability to anticipate departmental and student needs.
• Skill in the use of microcomputers, computer terminals, and academic and office software platforms (BANNER) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.  
• Ability to creatively and independently problem solve by prioritizing and multitasking while under pressure.
• Ability to communicate orally and in written format in English and Spanish. Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to collaborate with various entities inside and outside of the department.
