Position: Assistant Professor, Director of Bands

Position Summary:

Create and maintain a productive learning environment for students in the band and music education programs. Rehearse and conduct ensembles associated with the band program. Teach conducting and wind-band literature and methods courses, as well as other courses assigned by the department. Carry out scholarly and creative activities that promote the band program and enhance professional qualifications. Collaborate with other faculty to promote high standards of musicianship. Work closely with band programs in community schools to promote educational quality and for student recruitment. Supervise instrumental student teaching. Provide service to the university, community, and profession through appropriate assignments and activities as approved by the department. 


Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Create and maintain a productive learning environment for students in the band and music education programs. 40%
  • Rehearse and conduct ensembles associated with the band program. 15%
  • Teach conducting and wind-band literature and methods courses, as well as other courses assigned by the department.15%

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a D.M.A. in Conducting, or a Ph.D., or Ed.D. in Music Education.

  • Knowledge of the principles and methodology of band conducting and instrumental pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of philosophies, standards, and procedures involved in a music education program.
  • Proven skills as an accomplished teacher and conductor. Experience in instrumental music education.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and teach designed courses.
  • Ability to work closely with music educators in community schools.
  • Ability to carry out appropriate scholarly/creative work with high professional standards.
  • Ability to consult regularly with faculty who work with students in bands and instrumental music education, including winds, brass, and percussion.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty for auditions in winds, brass, and percussion.
  • Commitment to maintaining appropriate professional standards in all interactions with students and colleagues.
