Position: System Specialist I-II-III IT Security

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Information Security Officer (ISO) the IT Security Technician will provide support of IT systems to faculty, staff, and students users through installing and maintaining client side security products. Audits, scans and secures systems in order to protect sensitive data. Assists the security team maintain, monitor, audit, and implement the security for enterprise wide systems including but not limited to desktops. Document and maintain technical procedures within various IT knowledgebase. Makes recommendations on security solutions to areas of campus and assists with implementation of those solutions. 


Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Perform scans and audits of systems for Personally Identifiable Information and helps with securing sensitive data.  20%
  • Perform troubleshooting on client side security products. 20%
  • Provide procedures for troubleshooting or answers to frequently asked security questions and document them for knowledgebase articles. 15%  
  • Provide security awareness training to end users and informs students and employees of UVU security policies and practices.  10%  
  • Monitor electronic devices to provide intrusion detection and identify possible security breaches.  10%
  • Provide technical support of VPN and AV software on client computers.  10%
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned. 15%

Qualifications:

Level I - Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate’s degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position, administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling three years, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position.  

Level II - Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 2 years of experience related to the essential functions/duties, administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred, 1 year of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling four years, 1 year of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position.  

Level III - Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties  administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred,  2 years of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling five years, 2 years of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position.  

  • Knowledge and experience with information technology security issues and best practices.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in information technology.
  • Knowledge and experience with operating systems and protocols used within organizations these include: Windows 7, XP, 2003 Server, Mac OSX, and Linux. Knowledge of open source security tools like Nessus, Snort, Wireshark, and Nmap.
  • Knowledge of Malware, Antivirus, and host firewalls/IPS.
  • Skills: Familiar with TCP/IP and application network protocol.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work in a team environment as a team player and work independently.
