Position Summary:

The coordinator of Academic Tutoring is a full-time staff member who works under the direction of the Associate Dean of University College to develop and manage strategic planning, finance and budgeting, tutor hiring and training, materials, and marketing for the Academic Tutoring program, which assists students in improving their performance in non-mathematics and non-writing areas. The coordinator's primary responsibility is the smooth and effective daily operations of Academic Tutoring, including the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of tutors; overseeing and managing the delivery of services; projecting and tracking budget expenditures; coordinating services with faculty members; developing and overseeing marketing efforts; and carrying out assessment related to programs and services.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  •  Provide vision, direction, and strategic planning 
  •  Promote use of services to UVU students
  •  Hire, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate tutors

o   Establish employment policies and procedures that contribute to hiring qualified tutors

§  Interact with faculty for tutor referrals

§  Ask tutors to encourage top students to apply for tutoring positions

o   Direct tutor training program and follow guidelines established by CRLA International Tutor Certification Program

o   Supervise tutors to ensure the program is running smoothly and students receive the help they need

§  Develop and implement tutoring policies

§  Create a positive environment for tutoring and learning

o   Schedule hourly tutors each semester for academic subjects

o   Manage tutor payroll, promotions, assignments, and evaluations

o   Complete and maintain all necessary personnel action and information forms and files related to hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, and evaluating tutors, including payroll information

  • Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising lab assistants 
  • Oversee and coordinate tutor-led classroom support groups such as Supplemental Instruction or other applicable models for designated courses
  •  Conduct regular program assessment

o   Collect, maintain, and analyze extensive quantitative statistics

o    Administer and analyze qualitative student and tutor evaluations

  •  Oversee and manage the program budget
  •  Manage, develop, and maintain program resources, including text materials, physical space, web site, and online
  • Coordinate with other tutoring services coordinators and with appropriate faculty to provide maximum outcomes


Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Part-time, student, and work study employees and volunteer constituents.

Special Requirements of the Position:
  • Occasional evening/weekend work  
  • Occasional travel (visiting tutoring satellites, attending conferences, etc.)




Graduation from an accredited institution with a masters degree in Education, Administration, or a field related to areas commonly tutored such as the Sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Physics), History, Finance, or Business Management. Two years of full-time experience in a supervisory position. Experience in tutoring and/or teaching is desirable.

  • Knowledge of best practices and processes for peer tutoring and supplemental instruction.
  • Ability to solve problems and interact effectively with tutors, students, and faculty to promote positive results.
  • Ability to be self-directed and to complete tasks without supervision.
  • Experience in supervising others.
  • Ability to determine program outcomes and assessment measures to ensure quality of tutoring services.
  • Ability to facilitate and maintain program certifications and accreditation requirements.
  • Experience in managing a budget.
  • Skill in tracking and managing statistics and information needed for decision-making and program improvement.
  • Ability to coordinate with the Tutoring and Academic Skills Services team and Associate Dean of University College to set and achieve goals and collaborate on special projects.
