Position Summary:

Perform cataloging and classification of library material (i.e., books, periodicals, videos, recordings, software, etc.) using AACR2 (Anglo-American 2), Library of Congress, MARC (Machine-Readable), & OCLC (Online Union) cataloging rules/systems. Assist in maintaining the library collections by interacting with librarians in areas of collection development, sorting donations, and searching for lost and missing library materials. Process donations of non-serials from their receipt through acquisitions and into the cataloging process.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Interprets complex AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2) and MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) rules.

  • Interprets complex Library of Congress subject headings and classification (Call #) rules.

  • Determines correct cataloging to create original bibliographic records on computer.

  • Searches bibliographic records on OCLC Online Union Catalog.

  • Evaluates OCLC records for editing and importing to Symphony (UVU Library Catalog).

  • Resolves discrepancies between actual library items, corresponding bibliographic records, and cataloging rules.

  • Assists in resolving problems with Symphony cataloging software.

  • Assists in consultations with other library departments (serials, circulation, acquisitions) to resolve problems.

  • Informs library personnel about cataloging rules and classification procedures when questions arise.

  • Confers with librarians regarding worn and outdated library materials.

  • Assists serials department in maintaining a database of items at bindery for repair and general binding.

  • Sorts incoming donations by librarian, making selections when asked.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of category codes used by the library.

  • Searches library shelves for lost and missing items.
  • Inputs necessary changes in status on Symphony database to inform patrons of status of library materials.

  • Procures printouts of lost and missing library items.

  • Determines if materials are lost or missing and make necessary changes in Symphony database.

  • Confers with library director to determine action of items missing for an extended period of time.

  • Delivers lists of lost and missing items to librarians for possible replacement.

  • Enters donations into Symphony acquisitions module.

  • Sorts and searches donated items to determine existing holdings.

  • Assigns donations to the appropriate librarian.

  • Creates category codes to donated items added to the collection.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

High school diploma plus one year of experience related to the summary of duties. 

  • Ability to learn and implement new computer applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse group of individuals.
  • Interpersonal, problem-solving, organization, and supervisory skill.
  • Knowledge of library environment and services.
  • Ability to perform cataloging functions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and perform a variety of complex tasks.
