Position Summary:

Manages, directs, and supervises the development, planning, design, and creation of institutional materials for both print and Web media. Acts as art director/senior designer for University Marketing & Communications Department. Acts as project manager and manages design project flow for institutional projects. Coordinates closely with the Director of Publications to phase in editorial aspects of projects. Manages services of University Marketing design group including designers, photographers, artists, and illustrators; full and part-time. Manages the creative production of Sequel Magazine and serves as the publication's art director. Works with the Director of Marketing & Publications (DMP) in managing campus-wide marketing campaigns and the Utah Valley University brand.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Plans design aspects of all publications produced by department from conceptualization to final product.

  • Designs original concepts and creates professional publications.

  • Coordinates work projects with campus customers to ensure satisfaction and positive relations.

  • Approves selection of papers, inks, photos, illustrations to be included in publications.

  • Coordinates printing process to ensure quality finished products.

  • Coordinates the production of publications for special events.

  • Develops procedures for the design process and coordinates College Marketing protocol.

  • Collaborates with purchasing office throughout bidding process, and with printers throughout printing process.

  • Directs procurement of quality photos by hiring professional photographers.

  • Oversees organization in archiving photos & maintenance of online photo gallery.

  • Manages the designing of publications using Adobe Creative Suite software.

  • Oversees hiring of part-time and intern graphic designers.

  • Enforces UVU Graphics Standard policies for all printed materials representing the college.

  • Coordinates ongoing training/collaboration with designers/photographers campus-wide to develop consistent visual identity.

  • Cultivates creativity among design group.

  • Coordinates with Director of Events to insure consistent brand signage and lettering throughout campus.

  • Manage budgets as assigned.

  • Manages project flow and establishes a project prioritization system.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assistant Director - Publication and Creative Services, Grade 40, Exempt

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design or a related field and three to five years of experience related to the summary of duties.

  • Knowledge of printing process including design concepts and  project management.
  • Knowledge of university and college design.
  • Knowledge of higher education policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to create brand-unified, high-quality print materials
  • Ability to manage a production schedule, meet and enforce deadlines, and communicate effectively.
  • Interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Skill in record management and file maintenance.
  • Skill in supervision.
  • Skill with and knowledge of the latest design software and hardware including illustration and digital photography programs as well as the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to manage budgets.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects at once.
