Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Professor of Dance will: create, manage and participate in a variety of learning environments and activities that provide opportunities for students to develop their fullest potential and achieve their learning objectives; collaborate professionally with other faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the department, college, staff and student body; support and seek always to fulfill the guidelines for the college embodied in the philosophy, mission, values and vision adopted by UVU.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Design and teach courses in all levels of Ballet Technique and Theory, Point, and Variations.   
  • Design and teach courses in at least two of the following areas: Music for Ballet Dancers, Character Dance, Jazz, Tap, Dance As An Art Form, and Orientation to Dance.  
  • Plan, prepare instructional materials, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught.
  • Instruct and supervise individuals and groups in classroom/labs/rehearsals.
  • Choreograph student performing groups within the Department of Dance.
  • Evaluate instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical and performance tests.
  • Maintain a student-oriented approach to education.   
  • Advise and mentor students. 
  • Maintain office hours and attend departmental meetings. Serve on Department, School, and College Committees. 
  • Assist in recruitment, advisement, and placement.
  • Develop effective business and educational partnerships at the campus, local, state and national levels.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

        Graduation from an accredited college or university with an M.F.A. or earned doctorate with evidence of teaching and performance excellence (substantial professional experience preferred).

        • Knowledge and expertise in all levels of Ballet Technique and Theory, Pointe, and Variations.
        • Knowledge of the principles and methodology of teaching techniques.  
        • Skills in recruiting, interviewing and placement of students. 
        • Skills in assisting counselors and other department heads in maintaining an effective program. 
        • Proven skills as an accomplished teacher/performer.   
        • Ability to create original choreography or re-stage classical works for student performances. 
        • Ability to develop curriculum and teach design courses.  
        • Ability to develop effective business and educational partnerships at the campus, local, state and national levels. 
        • Ability to communicate (written and oral) with a wide variety of students, faculty and others.
        • Ability to supervise others, including students and employees
