Position Summary:

Installs, administers, and optimizes library servers and related components to achieve high performance of the system as well as the various library applications running on the systems.  This includes general administration of the systems as necessary, administration of new implementations, and execution of developed processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment. The Systems Administrator II will be responsible for the day to day administration of the physical security, integrity, and safety of the library servers and related systems.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Coordinates and collaborates with network engineering, application administrators, and database administrators to ensure availability, reliability, stability and scalability of library systems to meet library demands.

  • Serves as tier 2 support to the help desk for systems and system resource issues.

  • Provides timely response to customer escalations. Prioritizes and responds to escalated help desk tickets as appropriate.

  • Assists with file system configuration and management.

  • Performs system backups and recovery procedures.

  • Implements system upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.

  • Monitors and tests system performance and creates performance statistics and reports.

  • Executes shell scripts as required.

  • Assists with the management of enterprise directory services and supporting systems infrastructure.

  • Assists with administration and monitoring of data backup and restores operations.

  • Responds to storage access and retrieval issues.

  • Creates required reports in response to library staff and user needs.

  • Performs storage server/database transaction and security audits.

  • Works with systems and database administrators to implement storage architectures.

  • Adheres to service level agreements with end-users regarding storage allocations, limitations, availability, and enforces data storage retention policies.

  • Allocates storage to end-users and teams based on established departmental requirements and available disk space.

  • Maintains training materials and systems documentation.

  • Provides guidance to junior members of the team.

  • Assists with library collection development in fields relative to areas of expertise.

  • Maintains hands-on familiarity with library operations by and under the direction of the systems librarian. 

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Special Requirements of the Position:
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.  

  • Sitting for extended periods of time.


A Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer science or a related field and one year of experience related to the summary of duties, OR any combination of education and experience totaling 5 years.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with library ILS Systems (i.e. Horizon, Unicorn, Endeavor, etc.) and of at least 2 of the following: SLES, Linux, GroupWise, MySQL, Oracle, Apache, or XML.
  • Working knowledge of various server platforms required, as well as a familiarity with relational database(s).
  • Basic experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of systems hardware and associated network equipment, including SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology.
  • Exposure to system performance monitoring and tuning tools.
  • Working knowledge of load balancing, clustering, and caching procedures and processes.
  • Working knowledge of scripting code using Perl, CGI, C, shell, and other scripting tools.
  • Familiarity with TCP/IP and application network protocols, firewall management, and operating system configuration.
  • Understanding of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as eDirectory and/or LDAP directories.
  • Ability to gain understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Good written and oral communication skills; good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.
  • Ability to present ideas in business/academic-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Highly self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
