Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Accessibility Services,  the Specialist - Accommodative Services will; handle day-to-day operations, implementing all accommodative services for students with disabilities, ensure all student's accommodations are individualized and in compliance with disability legislation, both ADA, 1990 and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Monitor new and innovative approaches to providing effective accommodative services for students with a disability. 
  • Monitor ASD's compliance under Section 504 and the ADA.

  • Assist with the process of recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, evaluation and if necessary the termination of student workers.

  • Arrange and provide text on CD and accommodative furniture (desk, tables-including wheelchair accessible tables) for students with disabilities.

  • Ensure policies and procedures are followed of accommodative services for students with disabilities.

  • Assist counselors in modifying/implementing strategies to improve student's academic performance.

  • Assist the Director with the coordination and improvement of the Accommodative Lab.

  • Assist in purchasing, maintenance and repairs of all specialized ASD accommodative equipment, computers, and technology.

  • Coordinate training on accommodations and technology; as well as inventory of equipment.

  • Research advantages and/or disadvantages of latest accommodative equipment, technology, and service delivery.

  • Manage purchasing, maintenance, repair and inventory of technology and computers.

  • Assist and update Director with ongoing budget projections.

  • Prepare reports and statistics regarding specialized ASD accommodative equipment and computer technology.

  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

Graduated from an accredited institution with a Bachelor of Special Education, Social Work, or related Behavioral Science degree and two years of experience related to the summary of duties or any combination of education and/or experience as described above.

  • Knowledge of American Sign Language interpreting, Deaf culture, effective communication, and rapport building techniques.
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation regarding people with disabilities and accommodative practices (i.e. ADA, 504 Legislation).
  • Knowledge of medical, psychological, and social implications of physical, mental, emotional, and learning disabilities.
  • Skill in organization, maintenance, and effective record and information management.
  • Skill in the use of assistive computer hardware, software programs, and accommodative equipment available for individuals with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Skill in accommodative testing.
  • Ability to follow specific written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to supervise. 
  • Ability to deal with the public and evaluate and solve complex problems.
