Position: Senior Database Administrator - IT Services

Position Summary:

Ensure the availability and integrity of all production database instances and data. Install Oracle RDBMS, IAS, and Banner upgrades and patches. Ensure the availability of all reporting database instances. Ensure the availability of all test database instances and other IT related database instances. Keep current with the latest RDBMS trends in industry.

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
  • Plans, maintains, and test appropriate databases of the backup and recovery procedures.

  • Monitors and analyzes performance of administrative production database instance and fine tune where necessary.

  • Reviews production database instance alert log and trace files on a daily basis.

  • Implements Oracle's OFA (optimal flexible architecture) where possible.

  • Develops and maintains integrated process within host system shut down/restart mechanism to include auto shutdown/restart.

  • Investigates and resolves database security and integrity issues.  

  • Develops plans and supporting information relating to RDBMS and host platform sure satisfactory short/long term operations.

  • Audits current content and availability of relevant Oracle RDBMS and IAS patches and upgrades.

  • Applies Oracle RDMBS and IAS patches and upgrades in a timely organized manner.

  • Consults with user community regarding appropriate opportunities to apply patches and upgrades.

  • Maintains and keeps current on availability of annual Banner releases and associated SCT installation requirements; launches annual Banner releases in a timely and organized manner.

  • Verifies availability of testing database instances, allowing user community ample opportunity to explore and test.

  • Coordinates with user community regarding appropriate opportunities to apply annual releases in production environment.

  • Informs user community regarding availability and necessity of application of interim product patches; applies interim product patches in a timely and organized manner-first to testing instances, then production; monitors SCT ListServ groups related to product patches.

  • Designs, implements, and maintains appropriate production instance to reporting instance data transport and refresh mechanism.

  • Creates and maintains database roles, profiles, and other security objects as well as verifies appropriate access to information contained in the reporting database instance(s). 

  • Develops and maintains scheduled auto database instance cloning mechanism to clone production instance to any testing.

  • Develops and maintains data loading/refresh mechanisms for all other IT related database instances.

  • Creates and maintains database roles and profiles to ensure appropriate access to information. 

  • Monitors and analyzes the performance of all other IT related database instances, fine tuning where necessary.

  • Develops plans and supporting information relating to the RDBMS and host platform.

  • Verifies satisfactory short and long term database operation of all other IT related database instances.

  • Establishes and maintain an up-to-date library of relevant publications and resource materials.

  • Attends conferences, seminars and training classes and any other meeting necessary. 

  • Serves as a technical resource for other IT personnel. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.

Special Requirements of the Position:
  • Obtains OCP certification in database administration.


Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in Information Systems or related field and four years of full-time experience; or a bachelor's degree and six years of full-time experience; or any combination of education and experience totaling ten years. Must have OCP certification.

  • Knowledge of Oracle Database Management methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Backup and Recovery methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Performance Monitoring and Tuning methodologies and techniques.
  • Knowledge of and skilled in the use of Sun Solaris, Windows NT/2000 and OpenVMS operating systems.
  • Knowledge of and skilled in the use of Oracle Database tools such as SQL*Plus, SQL*Loader, PL/SQL, Export/Import, Database Creation Assistant, Net Manager, Enterprise Manager, TOAD.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to exhibit integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
