Program details:This experience allows students to see the islands of Samoa in a way that will create an appreciation for the culture of Samoa while making a difference in the lives of the people. Participants will have the opportunity to earn internship and department credits. Students will be immersed in the community by teaching elementary children in the local schools about strep throat and rheumatic fever. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with healthcare workers and experience clinicals in local hospitals and clinics.
The islands of Samoa include beautiful beaches, tropical rain forests, and other natural wonders. Students have an opportunity to balance work with fun, and experience authentic Samoan culture. Information Sheet
Tentative dates: May 2 - June 21, 2013; tentative travel dates: May 2 - 18, 2013.
Program sites: Participants will stay in the capital city of Apia. Excursions will be on the islands of Upolu and Savaii.
Anticipated curriculum: Community health students will register for Special Topics in Community Health (HLTH 490R) during spring 2013 and International Health (HLTH 350G) and International Health Education Internship (HLTH 483R, 3 credits)
during summer 2013. Community health participants should have junior or senior status.
Nursing students may register for Nursing in the Community (NURS 4320), Nursing in the Community Clinical (NURS 4325), Nursing in Global Perspective (NURS 441G), and Internship in Nursing (NURS 481R – 3 or 4 credits) for a minimum of 7 credits during summer 2013. Nursing participants need to have completed Nursing 3330 at the time of travel.
Estimated participation fee: $2,995. Apply by November 26, 2012, for this price.
Participation fee covers: Lodging, some meals, in-country transportation, entry fees, international health insurance.
Participation fee does not cover: UVU tuition (approx. $160 per credit hour), some meals, passport, round-trip airfare, discretionary spending.

Application deadline: November 26, 2012. Submit application, two letters of reference, $195 non-refundable application fee, and $300 program deposit. If you miss the deadline, you may be welcome to apply until the program is full, but please note that the participation fee will be higher and program space is limited. Tuition Waivers: UVU Employee & Employee Dependent Tuition Waivers may be applied for up to six credits of ISP tuition.
Financial aid: Pell grants and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to this program, based on eligibility.
Applicants must have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (BA105) and complete all necessary application forms for financial aid.
