and between people with different points of view. They also gain an understanding of the importance of relationships.

Welcome

Brie Joseph
- Since her childhood, Brie has had a passion for archaeology and language studies. Not knowing whether to pursue a
degree in archaeology or Spanish, she decided to study both and earned degrees from the University of Minnesota
in anthropology and Spanish, with a minor in Latin American Studies. She later received a master’s degree in Latin
American Studies from the University of Florida. Brie has attended four study abroad programs, ranging from a Mayan
ethnography program in Guatemala and Spanish in Venezuela, to archaeological studies in Greece. These
experiences allowed her to witness the consequences of civil war and the struggle to preserve indigenous culture in
Guatemala, as well as political and military demonstrations in Venezuela. In all, Brie has travelled to more than 20
countries, though her favorite memories involve chasing “chicken buses” down the Pan-American Highway.
Before joining UVU, Brie worked in the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida where she
discovered that her interest in international education extends to working with the international student
population as well.
Marianna Henry
- As a student during the 2009-10 school year, Marianna worked at the International Center as the International
Study Programs assistant. Upon graduation, she sadly left the Center for a full-time position elsewhere. When the
International Study Programs Coordinator position opened, she happily accepted the offer to return to UVU.
She thoroughly enjoys working with the staff, the students, and everything international. Marianna loves to travel;
she participated in a student exchange to Australia in 2004. She is thrilled to be back with the International Center,
helping students achieve their own unforgettable international experience.
Farewell

Leanna Escobar
- Leanna was a critical component for international success on campus. She loved to learn and share languages
and cultures of the world with everyone at UVU. But Leanna is now moving international: she is on her way to Chile
as her husband Ernesto takes up the opportunity to intern with the United Nations' offices in Santiago.
The International Center made amazing strides with Leanna's expertise and passion. We know she will continue
to have success in her future endeavors.

Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates, And the Story of the New China by John Pomfret
- John Pomfret’s evocative recounting of the lives of his former classmates in the Nanjing University History Class of
1982. As one of the first American students to live and study with Chinese after the revolution, Pomfret saw the country
as few Americans had. Leaving China in 1982, Pomfret returned for the Tienanmen Square protests and the crackdown
of June 4, 1989. Expelled by the Chinese government at that point, he again returned to live from 1998-2005 as the
Washington Post’s bureau chief in Beijing.
